Transcript of Statement to the Press by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Following Talks with Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, Ashgabat, March 16, 2010

I want to thank my colleague for the hospitality and the invitation to visit Turkmenistan for the next round of bilateral consultations.

Today I was received by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. During the conversation, which was very warm and constructive, we substantively discussed the challenges facing our states in carrying out the agreements reached at the highest level during the recent visit of the Turkmen President to Russia and his talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

We noted the strategic character of the bilateral relationship, and the gradual development of ties in the trade and economic sphere. Actively working are the intergovernmental commissions, headed by the vice-premiers of the two countries: on the Russian side by Viktor Zubkov and on the Turkmen side by my counterpart Rashid Meredov.   Full story
 

Transcript of Remarks and Response to Media Questions by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at Joint Press Conference Following Talks with Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, Moscow, March 9, 2010

Esteemed colleagues,

Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and I have discussed the state of our bilateral relations, regional cooperation in various formats, primarily in northern Europe, and relations between Russia and the European Union. We appreciate the support Finland invariably gives to the deepening of our strategic partnership with the EU. Traditionally we also cooperate on various international issues that are on the agenda of the world community.

The main conclusion on the basis of today's talks is that our relations are on the rise. This year we observe another anniversary – December 31 will mark 90 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. Russia, like Finland, is interested in how to further strengthen good-neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation. It is our strategic course, which has broad support in Russian society.   Full story

Dear colleagues and friends,

Igor Ivanovich Shuvalov has substantively and extensively delineated the challenges facing Russia’s chairmanship of the CIS, and our approach to strengthening and developing the economic component of the Commonwealth. For my part, I would like to illuminate this theme from a traditional foreign policy angle, with regard for our vision of the overall picture of a rapidly changing world and for our assessment of the long-term trends in world development.

In today’s world, the distinctions between internal and external means of safeguarding national interests and security are being erased. Therefore, diplomacy is substantially widening its functions, which now do not just include the promotion of economic development and the advancement of the tasks of energy and other security. The focus of foreign policy endeavors encloses the whole spectrum of national life issues, the key ones of which relate to development in the broadest sense of the word. It is development in accordance with the demands of the times that serves as the principal means of safeguarding the security of the state today.   Full story
