Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov Speaks to US Special Envoy for Middle East Peace George Mitchell by Telephone

A telephone conversation took place on September 3 between Alexander Saltanov, Russia's Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister, and George Mitchell, US Special Envoy for Middle East Peace.
An exchange of views took place on the first stage of direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, launched in Washington the day before. Both sides underlined the need to establish favorable conditions for successful advancement of the negotiation process with a view to solving the key issues of Palestinian-Israeli settlement.
A possible schedule of bilateral consultations on the situation in the Middle East also was discussed, particularly with regard for an upcoming ministerial meeting of the Quartet of Middle East mediators in New York on September 21.
