STATEMENT BY ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Regarding Terrorist Act in Tel Aviv

1038-30-04-2003

On the night of April 29-30, an act of terrorism was again committed in Tel Aviv as a suicide terrorist set off an explosive device, killing several people and injuring scores of others. We strongly condemn this crime and express our deeply felt condolences to the families of the dead and sympathy to all those who suffered.

This action causes all the more anger as it was undertaken immediately after the approval of a new composition of the Palestinian government, this offering a real chance to get over the protracted crisis and to start onward movement towards a Palestinian-Israeli settlement on the basis of the Road Map, agreed upon by the Quartet of international mediators. It is obvious that the authors of this bloody provocation had tried to bring the evident positive developments to naught.

At this crucial moment, we call upon Israel not to succumb to emotions and to show restraint and composure and upon the PNA leadership to take the necessary effective steps to find and punish those guilty of the crime and to prevent new terrorist acts.
